Australia does not have an 18+ rating for computer games. There is an 18 rating for videos and movies but not for computer games (including consoles).

The highest rating is MA15+. If a game is considered unsuitable for 15 year olds then the game is either banned from sale, or requires modification by the games developer until it is considered suitable for the 15 rating.

Any gamers in australia should already be aware of the increasing inconsistency in the ratings board and the urgent need for an 18+ rating. The time is NOW.

The Commonwealth Government has released a discussion paper which briefly summarises the key arguments for and against an R 18+ classification for computer games.

THE QUESTION
Should the Australian National Classification Scheme include an R18+ classification category for computer games?
     (  ) Yes    (  ) No

The government is seeking public submissions on whether the Australian National Classification Scheme should include an R 18+ classification category for computer games.  Submissions can be made by downloading and completing the multiple choice questions in the submission template and returning via email.

Submissions are invited by close of business 28 February 2010. Submissions received after the due date may not be considered.

If you want to include feedback comments with your submission, keep the comments short and supportive. Childish comments such as "give us an 18 rating you fags" are unlikely to help support the argument that most gamers are responsible adults!

Rather than re-state the known arguments why there should be an R18+ rating, I think it would be better to write comments about the negative counter-arguments e.g. there would be a risk of exposure to children of R18+ games, and the impact of games on children. Direct your comments about these counter-arguments because they are the greatest hurdle to overcome.

The subject of this topic is a reflection on the recent Electronic Arts game Left For Dead 2 which was initially refused the MA15+ classification and banned in Australia.

EA heavily modified the game for Australia and was subsequently approved for the M15+ rating.

“The board notes that the game no longer contains depictions of decapitation, dismemberment, wound detail or piles of dead bodies lying about the environment.... No wound detail is shown and the implicitly dead bodies and blood splatter disappear as they touch the ground.”

The resulting game has been sanitised so much that it no longer portrays the horror, intensity and suspense of the original, its just plain and dull. As soon as you kill a zombie it vanishes before its body hits the floor, quite disconcerting. Subsequently the game has received extremely negative reviews in Australia.

One of the other problems facing Australian gamers is the lack of consistency in the boards descisions.

In order for  Left 4 Dead 2 to receive approval on the MA15+ rating, EA also had to remove the infected riot police zombies because it was considered "violence against authority figures". Technically they are not authority figures but zombies in the clothing of authority figures, but this was irrelevant.

The recently released Modern Warfare 2 also has a level where you kill (human) riot police at a Russian airport, the same level that involves the player in a massacre of innocent civilians. And yet Modern Warfare 2 was approved on the MA15+ rating without any modification. Australian gamers play the same version as the rest of the world.

Australia desperately needs an 18 rating for computer games, and a more consistent ratings by the classification board.

Please show your support. You have until Feb 28th 2010 to voice your concerns and send your submission.
